Settlers first came to the Jacksboro area in the mid-1850s, drawn by the land office's offerings. Many people settled down by Lost Creek. They farmed the land between the river and the West Fork of Keechi Creek. The town gradually began to take shape, and the settlers started calling it Mesquiteville. This was because it was growing larger, and there were more buildings, including a church and schoolhouse. In 1857, the community was chosen to be the county seat. It was subsequently renamed Jacksboro in memory of William H. Jack and Patrick, his brother, who fought in the Texas Revolution. That year, the first stagecoach arrived from the Butterfield Overland Mail service. This service ran until early 1861.
